Conquering Technology Barriers
Community Tech House Inc. (CTH) began as a private foundation in July 2020 and transitioned into a public charity in April 2024, under the guidance of Lynn Harrell Johnson. The genesis of CTH traces back to the challenges Lynn faced during the COVID-19 Pandemic. After enduring a layoff from a 35-year stint with a company due to pandemic-induced staff reductions in May 2020, she also had to close her House of Styles hair salon to curb the virus spread.
Faced with these setbacks, Lynn swiftly reimagined her salon’s purpose, envisioning a hub that not only sustained her business but also served the community by leveraging her skills and experience. As the pandemic forced reliance on technology for communication, Lynn recognized the digital divide, where those lacking computer knowledge or access to devices were left isolated. In response, she launched Community Tech House, offering five computers and a printer to aid adults in tasks such as unemployment filing, job searches, and virtual communication, all while adhering to safety protocols during the isolation period.
